It will vary according to your level of expertise, amount of available work and your country. Many Makeup Artists will do a certain degree of fx makeup as part of their range-indeed many enjoy this as it offers a fun deviation from straight and corrective makeup.
Specifically for makeup effects in the UK on a big job, head of department will naturally earn the most and shoulder the most responsibility and earn around £1500-£3000 a week depending on the budget.
Most people in the crew will earn anywhere between £300-1300 again varying on level of expertise and the production budget. If you work on a £2 million movie, you can’t expect to earn the same as a £100 million movie.
In the States, there are strong union boundaries that cover most of the bigger jobs (certainly on set where actors And Makeup application is invilved), and these help ensure better treatment, payscale and benefits which is not really the case in the UK or elsewhere. This is good if you are in the union, but it is notoriously hard to get into and requires a certain amount of work experience to qualify.
Where prosthetics are concerned there is a great deal of work that takes place outside of the set and prior to the shoot, and this tends to be a lower rate than on set application. This is largely due to the interaction with film crew, actors etc which is not really the case in a workshop which is often an anonymous industrial unit where all the processes in manufacturing actually take place.
If you are working on crowd scenes making up background performers (such as in battle scenes) you may also earn less than if you were to make up a principal actor who wears a makeup that will be filmed in close up and maybe even end up on the poster. Again, this is largely to do with the increased responsibility. It can vary between £200-£400 a day, more if you are requested by an actor or if you are a Makeup Artist to a particular performer.
In a workshop, there are many different kinds of jobs that may never see a film set as only the final application needs to be done on set. There are sculptors, mould makers, casting, finishing and art finishing, hair work, under suit fabrication and animatronics that are all under the umbrella of ‘makeup effects’. It is difficult to pin down where the boundaries lie as the work crosses all kinds of skill sets. If you need to make a werewolf costume with leg extensions, a hairy body, a snout that extends twelve inches from the face then you need more than just makeup to create it-although it would be classed as a makeup effect.
